A Multi-Phase, 469,000+ SF Corporate Headquarters Expansion & Campus Repositioning

🟦 PROJECT OVERVIEW
Edwards Lifesciences—the global leader in heart-valve innovation—undertook a multi-year transformation of its Irvine headquarters campus, reimagining it as a wellness-driven workplace, innovation hub, and global convening environment.

Led by Clune Construction, the project spanned multiple phases between 2019 and 2022 and delivered more than 469,000 square feet of new construction, renovation, and amenity-driven development.

Rather than a single renovation, the campus expansion repositioned Edwards’ headquarters as a high-performance corporate environment—balancing advanced engineering, architectural clarity, and employee experience at institutional scale.

My role focused on architectural and commercial photography documentation, capturing construction progress, craftsmanship, and final delivery across several key phases—creating a unified visual narrative across a three-year development lifecycle.

“This was not a renovation—it was a campus-scale repositioning designed to support innovation, wellness, and long-term growth.”

🟥 THE STRATEGIC CHALLENGE
Photographing an active, high-security life sciences campus undergoing phased redevelopment required navigating a complex set of creative, technical, and operational constraints. The project unfolded across multiple concurrent construction zones, each with limited access windows inside a secure corporate environment, while architectural elements continued to evolve—ranging from large-scale atriums and interconnecting bridges to green walls and multi-story interior volumes that demanded precise perspective control. Compounding this complexity was a multi-year timeline, which required visual consistency across phases despite changing conditions and construction milestones. Beyond documentation, the imagery needed to perform strategically: showcasing Clune Construction’s execution quality at flagship scale, positioning Edwards Lifesciences’ amenities as world-class corporate infrastructure, supporting future capital projects, leadership communications, and investor presentations, and delivering a cohesive, repeatable visual system that could carry the narrative across the entire campus transformation. Consistency over time—rather than isolated hero imagery—was the defining challenge.

“Documenting a live, high-security life sciences campus required precision, coordination, and consistency across years—not days.”

🟧 THE APPROACH
The visual strategy was built around three core principles:

  1. Precision-Driven Architectural Accuracy
Perspective-controlled photography ensured vertical integrity in multi-story atriums, bridges, and interior volumes—allowing stakeholders to assess design intent, craftsmanship, and spatial clarity without distortion.
  2. Phased Visual Continuity
Each shoot was designed to align with prior and future phases, ensuring a consistent visual language across a project spanning multiple years and construction milestones.
  3. Dual-Purpose Imagery
Imagery needed to perform simultaneously as:
    • Technical documentation for construction and design teams
    • Aspirational brand assets for executives, investors, and future stakeholders

This hybrid approach elevated the visuals beyond marketing into a long-term asset library.

“Consistency over time matters more than isolated hero shots when documenting multi-year campus transformations.”

🟪 HOW HIGH-IMPACT VISUALS SUPPORT CAMPUS-SCALE DECISION-MAKING
For complex corporate developments, imagery functions as a strategic communication tool—not decoration.

Campus Context & Spatial Clarity
Wide architectural coverage communicates campus flow, inter-building connectivity, and spatial hierarchy—critical for leadership alignment and future planning.

Amenity Storytelling
High-impact visuals translate experiential spaces—atriums, dining halls, wellness centers—into tangible value drivers for talent attraction, retention, and corporate culture.

Operational Transparency
Detailed documentation of finishes, circulation, and architectural systems reduces ambiguity for internal teams and external stakeholders alike.

Day + Controlled Interior Lighting
Balanced lighting strategies communicate usability, scale, and atmosphere—ensuring spaces photograph as they perform in real use.

“On projects of this complexity, architectural imagery becomes a decision-making instrument—aligning leadership, validating investment, and preserving design intent across years of development.”

🟩 WHY THIS IMAGERY CREATES LONG-TERM VALUE — CORPORATE-GRADE INSIGHT

  1. Executive Alignment
Clear, consistent visuals enable leadership teams to evaluate progress and outcomes without repeated site visits.
  2. Capital & Investor Support
Professional documentation reinforces confidence in large-scale capital investment and long-term asset strategy.
  3. Brand & Talent Positioning
World-class imagery positions the campus as a destination workplace—supporting recruitment, retention, and internal culture initiatives.
  4. Portfolio Longevity
The visual system remains relevant across future renovations, expansions, and corporate communications.

“At over 469,000 square feet, the Edwards Irvine campus represents a sustained, multi-year investment in performance, people, and place.”
